Similar to the discussion of muscles and movement, dress and drapery also involves a critical evaluation of the artist's accurate portrayal of elements necessary to communicate the narrative. In this discussion, we will focus on the accuracy of clothing in art. Clothing has three functions in our society: (1) to protect the body from the elements, i.e. cold, rain, snow, sun, (2) to modestly conceal the body due to decency laws, and (3) to enhance or show off the body, i.e. push-up bras, padded shoulders on jackets, high heeled shoes.
