Pablo Picasso, Three Musicians, 1921. Naturalistic, Abstract or Symbolic? We can recognize three men. The one on the left is holding a clarinet, the middle one a guitar, and the one on the right sheet music. We see faces, legs, and feet However, under no circumstance, would we say that the painting is naturalistic, that it incorporated any details of these men from the direct observation of the real world. Where are the facial features, fingers, body shapes, etc. Abstract? Certainly! The bodies have been reduced into flat simple shapes with no relation to disegno esterno. Obviously, while the artist had observed musicians performing, the artist relied on his disegno interno to create this image. Symbolic? Probably not. There is no allusion to a deeper meaning of life or the world in which we live.
