Purposiveness of Art: Politics and Religion

When we analyze a work of art, we must take into consideration the how and why of its creation. We have begun to do that in regard to the artist's judgment as to the choice of style: disegno esterno or disegno interno. However, the artist's creativity is not the only factor in the creation of art. Many critics believe that society has an even greater impact or role. As the artist was socialized and educated within the society, s/he carries the virtues, morals, and political values of that society, consciously or not. Heinrich Wolfflin, who will be discussed later, believed that it is possible to study art's history without noting artists' names, and that art serves as a document of its time and place and is a product of that time and place and the artist can be seen as just a tool or instrument for that cultural expression.
