Two additional works addressing consumerism and the negative impact it has had on our psyche are Jenny Holzer’s Survival, 1983-5, and Barbara Kruger’s Untitled (Are We Having Fun Yet?), 1987.  The first is an installation/neon billboard at Caesar’s Palace Hotel in Las Vegas; the latter is a simulated magazine ad. Both maximize the visual impact associated with their cultural and media contexts. Holzer’s neon lights spelling out “Protect me from what I want” send the exact opposite message from the typical marquis that advertises Vegas shows. The media hopes to entice potential consumers into the casinos and nightclubs to indulge, splurge, and spend money. Holzer is rebelling against that hedonistic, capitalist mentality almost in an attempt to resist the pleasures of the city.
